Flyin' High
I think I tend to talk about my worries. Hence all the posts lately about Alexander's [now behind-us] surgery. But now that he's recovering smoothly (praise God!), the time has come to put in a word about the other major event here at the Cozy Holt -- namely, Eric's recent career change!
Yes, you read that right: I said career and not job. There will be no more lecture notes, office hours, and test-writing for this man! Earlier this month Eric wore his regalia to his last graduation... and stepped into a tall, efficient-looking office building for his first day of work as an actuary.
That he now works on the 30-something-floor seems only fitting. If this career venture were a mountain climb, the trailhead would be way back in the early days of our marriage, and Eric's been steadily gaining elevation ever since. For awhile it was "just a hobby," adopted to provide a little practical perspective for his math students. But then he tried his hand at the actuarial exams... and just kept passing them, danggit! So at some point the obvious next step was to consider making a job out of the field. And from there it seemed (from my vantage point at least) a little like skiing down a mountain: there was that tiny initial shove with the ski poles and suddenly you realize the scenery is just flying by.
But that's just because Eric has a knack for making hard work look graceful. Truth be told, he's put untold hours into studying, practicing, and sitting for the actuarial exams. And all this "on the side" while still giving 150% (the dean's words, not mine) at his teaching job. Oh, and did I mention he gives 150% at home, too?
So we at the Cozy Holt are very proud of him as he treks forth in this new and exciting direction! And we wish him years of fulfillment on the job!!
