Decisions, Take One

Who woulda thunk that there could be so many decisions in planning a wedding?!  I didn't, at least.  But I'm learning.  Learning that in the Land 'o the Free, wedding options, too, flow (or do they fall?) quite freely.

Take for instance, something that might seem like an insignificant detail: the top of the cake.  A romantic figurine of a bride and groom, right?  Apparently not -- for the woman making our cake has informed me that this is now outmoded.  Wedding cakes currently sport a giant metal initial representing the couple's new last name.  Personally, I would have a hard time taking a cake like this seriously -- especially since an enormous capital "H" on our cake would look rather like a field goal.

But in spite of my somewhat disgusted feelings towards the ridiculous lengths to which marketers will stretch their money-seeking tentacles, the notion of non-traditional cake toppers got me thinking and researching.  And along the way I began to change my mind.  Admittedly, the profane figurines of brides towing their husbands on a leash or fishing them out of an icing pond left me a little sick-feeling.  But I can't say I felt much more endeared to the traditional bride and groom either.  None of them really look like Eric and I... and why would I want two miniature strangers dancing on my wedding cake?

So, I located a few other options.  Please enjoy the pictures.  None of them depict the final (non-traditional) cake topper I chose in the end, by the way, so it will still be a surprise!  ...And don't worry -- it's not a football theme!

I like the first picture of the doves. Hope all is going well with the planning. You are a bit trendy after all... starting your own blog...WOW! Great pictures by the way. Do I get emails when you update or do I just check back now and again? Aunt Jan

Thanks -- glad you enjoy the blog and pictures! As far as e-mails go, I'm still trying to learn the ropes here. I want to set it up so people can receive e-mails if they want, but haven't quite figured it out. For now, if you check back about once a week, there should be something new up each time!

I know what you mean about decisions and choices, Jen. The cake itself can be daunting. After all, there are soooo many designs, flavors, fillings, and frostings that it could take months to decide! (What's sad is that the whole thing is gone in a matter of minutes.) What's fun about the topper is it reflects your personality as a couple, you'll be able to keep it as a memento, you can use it to top special anniversary cakes and... someday one of your kids or grandkids might even borrow it for their wedding cake. (Now wouldn't that be cool?!?) I can't wait to see what you chose! Kathleen :-]

What a great idea, Kathleen! I hadn't thought of the cake topper as something to use again. I think ours will make a lovely centerpiece on our kitchen table after the wedding -- maybe something we could bring out on our anniversary or on holidays... :)

I laughed SO HARD about that football field goal line that I had to explain to the entire Magdalen library why I was laughing!!
BTW - if you REALLY want a piece of your cake (other than the one that Eric feeds you!) make sure you get one ASAP! I didn't taste more than than one bite of my wedding cake until our first anniversary when we defrosted the top layer and finished it off!
